1.3 million

July 3, 2012

With gas prices falling and a mid-week July 4th holiday, AAA expects nearly 1.3 million New Jerseyans will travel 50 miles or more this week, an increase of 4.1 percent. AAA defined the Independence Day travel period as starting today and running to Sunday, July 8. Since many travelers plan to take advantage of the mid-week holiday and expand their time-off, AAA expects the average distance travelled to also expand -- to 723 miles, up 150 miles from last year’s 573 miles. Lower gas prices also contribute to the trend: New Jersey gas prices have dropped nearly 30 cents a mile from 2011, to $3.30 from $3.59.
