What it’s like to run a mass transit system during the pandemic

State leaders are trying to return some normalcy through gradual reopenings. With that comes providing more commuting options. Train, bus and ferry services have returned to near pre-coronavirus schedules despite a dramatic drop in ridership and plummeting revenues. The PATH system between New York and New Jersey increased service in mid-June to meet demand and rolled out a number of new safety and social distance guidelines. But the rail system faces an uphill battle if commuters don’t feel comfortable enough to return.
