Special Olympics athletes set sail with Atlantic Highlands program

Boat owners, captains and coaches take Special Olympics athletes out on the water in their own vessels as part of the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club’s Special Olympics Sailing Program.

The free, non-competitive program, runs weekly throughout the spring and summer. Athletes learn about sailing, enjoy time on the water and create new friendships.

“Being part of this family is just so rewarding, I just can’t tell you how much joy it gives everybody,” said Wayne Tidswell, chair of the sailing program.

The program is now in its 25th year. The athletes recently helped sail New Jersey’s official Tall Ship, the historic AJ Meerwald.
