Many unemployed workers in the state will soon see a reduction in their benefit payments. This is the final week they can receive the extra $600 a week in added benefits, that was allocated by Congress as part of an economic stimulus package. But the program will soon expire, and no agreement has been reached yet to extend the payments.
In Atlantic City, workers at the Borgata are spending the week getting ready for the casino’s reopening. The Borgata will become the last of Atlantic City’s nine casinos to return to business when it opens its doors to the public on Sunday.
If the state is looking for more revenue it shouldn’t touch the gas tax, according to Garden State Initiative. Regina Egea, the group’s president, believes the gas tax should be suspended. She says her organization analyzed public reports from the Transportation Trust Fund Authority and found the state has only delivered on a fraction of promised infrastructure improvements.
