Rep. Sires Says Economic Sanctions Can Be Taken Against Russia

With tension between Ukraine and Russia increasing, Congressman Albio Sires (D) told NJTV News Managing Editor Mike Schneider there is one option for action against Russia.

“Well at the moment I think the only option we have is real economic sanctions against Russia,” said Sires. “This is definitely an invasion.”

Sires said that military action will not be considered at the moment and that diplomatic efforts are going to be the ones going forward against Russia.

Sires said that it’s a very aggressive move by Russia and that Vladimir Putin is trying to protect himself as a leader trying to restore the old Soviet Union.

“I think now everybody realizes that’s what everybody sees — this is a throwback to the old Soviet Union,” Sires said. “This is a throwback to someone who will stop at nothing. He’s trying to get back all the territory that split from Russia, the Soviet Union.”

This is the second incursion by Putin, according to Sires. The first one occurred during a previous Olympic Games. Sires thinks that the move by Russia could lead to another Cold War.

If Putin does not back down and if shooting breaks out, Sires said that would be a problem as the United States has no will to go to war.

Sires said if Putin makes a move forward toward Ukraine, he will stay there and that it will be a problem for the next decade.
