As demonstrations continue against racism and inequality, many corporations have been speaking out in support of racial justice. But one prominent business leader says it’s not enough. John Harmon, the CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce in New Jersey says when it comes to the business world, the diversity is not there. He says African Americans need to be in more leadership roles.
In Newark, Mayor Ras Baraka is thinking about addressing economic inequality in another way. He’s an advocate of providing some residents with a guaranteed income — that’s a regular, no-strings attached cash payment. A task force he recently set up to study that idea just released its findings and recommends that Newark set up a pilot program.
Starting Tuesday morning, the Economic Development Authority will begin accepting applications for its expanded Small Business Grant Program. The EDA board is expected to approve an expansion to the program so that nonprofits will also be able to apply for the grants, which are for up to $10,000.
