Overnight New Jersey had the highest single-day increase in the death toll since the coronavirus outbreak began. Federal authorities have labeled the state as a coronavirus “hot spot.”
Tuesday’s numbers show the long road ahead. Gov. Phil Murphy announced 232 new fatalities and 1,232 total deaths. That’s with 3,361 new positive cases putting the state’s total at 44,416.
It’s all the more reason, Murphy says, to keep strong social distancing rules. He ordered all state and county parks to close indefinitely beginning Tuesday, and extended the public health emergency he issued March 9 for another 30 days.
