Former Newark Police Director Sheilah Coley tapped to lead Trenton PD

Sheilah Coley is poised to become Trenton’s first African American female police director.

Mayor Reed Gusciora announced the appointment Monday.

Coley would be the fourth police director under Gusciora, following three acting directors who’ve rotated through the position since the first-term mayor took office in July.

Coley’s career includes 25 years on the Newark police force, during which time she became the first woman to serve as chief, then director, of the department. She also served for three years as public safety director for East Orange.

Coley’s appointment requires confirmation by the City Council and approval by the Department Community of Affairs.
