Elizabeth Police Director James Cosgrove to resign over alleged use of racial, sexist slurs

The director of the Elizabeth Police Department is stepping down.

James Cosgrove will resign after an internal investigation found he used racist and sexist language in describing members of his staff.

Cosgrove’s resignation will be effective Thursday, according to Mayor Chris Bollwage, who appointed Cosgrove to the director post more than 20 years ago.

Earlier this week, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal called on Cosgrove to step down following a two-month internal affairs investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office that he says concluded, “over the course of many years, Director Cosgrove described his staff using derogatory terms, including racist and misogynistic slurs.”

Bollwage said he is also calling on Police Chief John Brennan to step aside during an investigation into a whistleblower complaint raised against him. The nature of that complaint was not revealed.
