The 28th District covers four Essex County communities — Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Irvington and Nutley — and a portion of Newark.
A majority-blue district, about 53% of its voters are Democrats, with only 8% Republican and most of the rest unaffiliated.
In the contest for the Senate seat, incumbent Democrat Ronald Rice, a Vietnam veteran from Newark, is facing off against Republican Frank Contella, whose LinkedIn page lists him as a radio host personality, of Nutley.
Democratic Assembly members Cleopatra Tucker of Newark and Ralph Caputo of Nutley are seeking re-election. Their Republican rivals are Monique Headen, an unsuccessful Essex County commissioner candidate last year, and Anthony D’Angelo, both of Newark.
