The 2nd District encompasses 17 communities in Atlantic County: Absecon, Atlantic City, Brigantine, Buena, Buena Vista, Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Folsom, Hamilton, Linwood, Longport, Margate City, Mullica, Northfield, Pleasantville, Somers Point and Ventnor City.
Democrats are the largest bloc of registered voters, making up 37% of all. About 26% are Republicans and most of the rest are unaffiliated.
But the Democrats’ 18,000-registrant lead over Republicans has not led to domination in legislative elections. This is one of the few districts in the state with representation split between the parties, with a Republican senator and two Democratic Assembly members — one of those seats was decided by less than 1,000 votes in 2019. As such, the district is always a battleground.
There will be new representation here next year because GOP Sen. Chris Brown resigned recently. Vincent Polistina, a former state assemblyman from Egg Harbor, was chosen by a Republican convention to fill Brown’s seat until the end of the term. Democratic Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo, a business owner from Northfield, is running against Polistina.
Assemblyman John Armato of Buena Vista is seeking reelection, along with Caren Fitzpatrick, an Atlantic County commissioner, on the Democratic ticket. The Republican nominees are Don Guardian, former mayor of Atlantic City, and Claire Swift, a Margate attorney.
