Election 2021: Legislative District 18

NJ Spotlight News | September 17, 2021 | NJ Decides 2021

The 18th District includes seven communities in Middlesex County: East Brunswick, Edison, Helmetta, Highland Park, Metuchen, South Plainfield and South River.

This has been considered a safe Democratic district, with 45% of voters registered as Democrats and only 16% as Republicans. Virtually all other voters in the district are unaffiliated.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Diegnan Jr., an attorney from South Plainfield, is running for re-election, facing a challenge from Republican Vihal Patel, a firefighter and veteran from Edison.

In the Assembly contest, Democratic incumbents Sterley Stanley, an insurance broker living in East Brunswick, and Robert Karabinchak, an Edison man who is president of a construction company, are facing four opponents. Comprising the Republican slate are Angela Fam, a real estate agent from East Brunswick, and Melanie McAnn Mott, a South Plainfield councilwoman. David Awad, a software engineer from Edison, is running on the Libertarian ticket. Independent Brian P. Kulas of East Brunswick is running under the slogan “An Inspired Advocate.”
