The 28th District covers four Essex County communities — Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Irvington and Nutley — and a portion of Newark.
A majority-blue district, about 53% of its voters are Democrats, with only 8% Republican and most of the rest unaffiliated.
All the incumbents are Democrats and all are running for reelection. There is a contest for the Senate race, with Sen. Ronald Rice of Newark facing a challenge from Quadir Selby of Irvington. Assembly members Cleopatra Tucker of Newark and Ralph Caputo of Nutley are also seeking reelection.
On the Republican ballot, Frank Contella of Nutley filed for the Senate seat and the Assembly candidates are Monique Headen and Anthony D’Angelo, both of Newark.
