Additional federal allocation for Portal Bridge replacement project

Additional appropriations made to the federal Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program in fiscal years 2018 and 2019 have yielded a $248 million allocation for the Portal Bridge replacement project.

“This funding is critical to advance the Portal Bridge replacement and provide much-needed relief to delay-weary commuters on the Northeast Corridor, said U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the ranking member of the Senate’s transit subcommittee. He added, “It’s a testament to the unrelenting efforts of our congressional delegation to overcome unprecedented roadblocks put up by the Trump administration.”

Other members of the Garden State’s congressional delegation involved in effort: Sen. Cory Booker and U.S. Reps. Bill Pascrell Jr., Albio Sires, Donald Payne, Jr.,Tom Malinowski, and Mikie Sherrill.

Pascrell added some historical context, “When the portal bridge was built, William Howard Taft was in the White House and Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics won the World Series.”
