Donation from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ to buy PPE for those battling COVID-19

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is spending $2.35 million to donate 500,000 N95 respirator masks and 81,000 face shields to Gov. Phil Murphy’s coordinated response effort to the coronavirus pandemic. The donation is the largest in the company’s 88-year history. The first shipment is expected to be delivered to the state for distribution beginning this week with additional deliveries planned throughout April.

“The heroes working the front lines in New Jersey hospitals put their own health at risk to care for New Jerseyans diagnosed with COVID-19, but they cannot do that without adequate personal protection equipment,” said Allen Karp, Horizon BCBSNJ’s executive vice president for Healthcare Management and Transformation. Horizon also announced $160,000 in contributions to local social-service agencies that are helping people facing economic hardship as a result of the pandemic.
