The solar industry in the United States now employs nearly 250,000 workers, according to the National Solar Jobs Census; about two-thirds work at installation and project development firms. Others work in manufacturing, operations and maintenance, sales, and miscellaneous categories. An additional 94,000-plus workers spend some portion of their time on solar-related work.
Solar jobs increased in 31 states last year, with Florida leading the way, followed by Georgia, Utah, New York, and Texas. But the number of solar jobs in New Jersey fell by 2.9% in 2019, a loss of 184 jobs. New Jersey now ranks 12th in the nation for jobs in the solar industry (6,225), according to the annual census by the National Solar Foundation.
