A jury has returned a split verdict in the federal tax evasion trial of the head of one of New Jersey’s most powerful Republican county organizations.
The panel on Wednesday convicted Ocean County GOP head George Gilmore of failing to pay payroll taxes at his law firm and submitting a false loan application. But they acquitted him of charges of filing false tax returns and deadlocked on tax evasion charges.
Prosecutors alleged that he spent lavishly while failing to pay more than $1 million in taxes between 2013 and 2015.
Gilmore didn’t testify during the trial. His attorney argued that Gilmore reported all his income and didn’t deceive the government about his inability to pay his taxes.
Gilmore declined comment as he left the courthouse. But his attorney says they plan to appeal the guilty verdicts.
