Sen. Bob Menendez made a show of strength as he launched his re-election campaign in his hometown of Union City yesterday. A lineup of Democratic Party power players, including Gov. Phil Murphy and Sen Cory Booker, showed up to support the recently embattled senator as he declared himself ready for a third term.
“Where would we be without Bob Menendez? Where would we be, and frankly, I don’t want to think about that,” Murphy said.
“Ladies and gentlemen, it is our time to stand with Bob Menendez, our champion. It is our time to stand for our values,” Booker said.
Menendez went on trial last fall, accused of participating in a bribery scheme. That ended in a mistrial, giving new life to his political career. He’s being challenged in the November election by Republican Bob Hugin, a former pharmaceutical company executive. The Hugin campaign released a statement yesterday that called Menendez “corrupt” and “ineffective,” and asked, “Is this the best we can do?”
