Number of days NJ could have kept operating on its 2017 budget reserve

It’s always good to have something tucked away for those rainy days, but apparently New Jersey needs to do a lot more tucking. According to the latest iteration of the Pew Charitable Trust’s Fiscal 50 Tool, New Jersey could have operated just 4.6 days on its budget reserve, which totaled slightly more than 1 percent of spending, during fiscal year 2017. The 50-state median was 29.3 days, based on reserve funds that totaled eight percent of spending.
