Yesterday, the defense called several character witnesses to the stand in the bribery and corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez.
Autism activist Kerry Magro described Menendez (D-NJ) as “one of the most honest and trustworthy people I’ve ever met in my life.”
Kerry Talbot, once an immigration expert for Menendez, testified there was “no coordinated effort” on behalf of eye doctor Salomon Melgen, the senator’s co-defendant in the case. (The government charges that Menendez lobbied Medicare on behalf of Melgen, as well as on another business matter, and on visas for his girlfriends — and that, in return, Melgen gave Menendez gifts, vacations, and campaign donations.)
Kerlyn Espinal, Menendez’s director of immigration services, said the senator has helped thousands of people get visas, not just the three of Melgen’s girlfriends the prosecution has focused on.
