Melgen’s Wife Says Menendez and Co-defendant Exchanged Gifts Out of Real Friendship

Bribery and corruption trial, now in its seventh week, hears from wife of senator’s co-defendant

U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez exchanged gifts over many years with his co-defendant Dr. Salomon Melgen, according to the latter’s wife Flor Melgen.

Mrs. Melgen also testified yesterday that when she asked Menendez to help a friend of hers who wanted to immigrate to the U.S., the senator recommended a Miami lawyer, leading her to conclude he could do nothing else for her on the matter.

Prosecutor Monique Abrishami drew an audible reaction from the courtroom when she remarked about a thank-you note and $100 check for food and lodging to the Melgens from then Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, “Here’s at least one politician who knows how to pay your husband back.”
