Sibelius: Menendez Lobbied for Medicare Policy Change

NJ senator was trying to reverse a policy that was costing his friend millions of dollars in Medicare reimbursements

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius testified at the corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez yesterday that he pressed for a Medicare policy change in 2012 that would have benefited his friend Dr. Salomon Melgen. On cross-examination, Sibelius said that Menendez did not mention Melgen’s name when discussing the issue.

Federal prosecutors are trying to prove that New Jersey’s senior senator made official representations on behalf of Melgen in return for gifts, trips, and campaign donations.
