Legislative District 34

NJ Spotlight | October 9, 2017 | Elections 2017

The 34th District includes four communities in Essex and Passaic counties: Clifton, East Orange, Montclair, and Orange.

Democrats account for more than half of all registered voters. About 9 percent are Republican; most of the rest have no party affiliation.

The Democratic incumbents are Sen. Nia H. Gill of Montclair, and Assembly members Sheila Oliver, the former Assembly speaker from East Orange, and Thomas Giblin, a labor union officer who lives in Montclair. Oliver’s name is on the ballot for Assembly, but she is also the lieutenant governor candidate running with Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Murphy.

For the Republicans, Mahir Saleh of Clifton is running for Senate, and Tafari Anderson and Nicholas G. Surgent, both also of Clifton, are running for the Assembly.
