Legislative District 29

NJ Spotlight staff | October 9, 2017 | Elections 2017

The 29th District covers Belleville and part of Newark in Essex County.

Heavily favoring Democrats, only 6 percent of district voters are registered as Republicans, while 52 percent are Democrats and most of the rest are unaffiliated.

Assemblywoman Blonnie Watson is not running again. Shanique Speight is running instead with Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor-Marin, who works in the Essex County Clerk’s Office. Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz is also seeking re-election. All are from Newark and all are Democrats.

The Republican ticket features Maria E. Lopez of Newark for Senate, and Jeannette Veras, a Newark woman who ran unsuccessfully two years ago, and Charles G. Hood of Belleville for Assembly.

Pablo Olivera, a perennial candidate from Newark, is running for the Senate seat under the slogan “One Nation Party.”
