Former government official tells of senator’s temper during testy phone call

At the federal corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez yesterday, a former official with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services testified that the senator had been “aggressive” and “angry” during a telephone conversation about the Medicare billing practices of Dr. Salomon Melgen, his co-defendant in the trial.

Jonathan Blum testified that when he tried to explain to Menendez that “… the agency never pays twice for the same drug … he [Menendez] wasn’t happy with the response.”

“The call was ended quite quickly, very angrily,” Blum said, adding “I believe he hung up on me.”
