The 37th District includes 13 communities in Bergen County: Alpine, Bogota, Cresskill, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Leonia, Northvale, Palisades Park, Rockleigh, Teaneck, and Tenafly.
Voter registration is 46 percent Democrat and 13 percent Republican, with most other district voters unaffiliated.
The Democratic incumbents are seeking re-election. Sen. Loretta Weinberg, the majority leader, is from Teaneck. Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, of Englewood, is a funeral director, and Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, of Englewood, is a former Bergen County sheriff who now works as a consultant.
The Republicans have primary battles for both houses. For the Senate nomination, Modesto Romero of Hackensack takes on Eric P. Fisher of Fort Lee. The Assembly contest features two teams: Gino P. Tessaro, making a second bid, and Angela Henricks, both of Hackensack, comprise one ticket, while Margaret S. Ahn of Fort Lee and Paul A. Duggan of Bogota make up the other.
