The 29th District covers Belleville and part of Newark in Essex County.

Heavily favoring Democrats, only 6 percent of district voters are registered as Republicans, while 52 percent are Democrats and most of the rest are unaffiliated.

Assemblywoman Blonnie Watson is not running again. Shanique Speight is running instead with Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor-Marin, who works in the Essex County Clerk’s Office. Sen. M. Teresa Ruiz is also seeking re-election. All are from Newark.

The Republican ticket features Maria E. Lopez of Newark for Senate, and Jeannette Veras, a Newark who ran unsuccessfully two years ago, and Charles G. Hood of Belleville for Assembly.
