Elections 2016: Congressional District 5

Colleen O'Dea | October 12, 2016 | Elections 2016

This northernmost New Jersey district, which includes parts of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties, is the state’s most talked about. GOP incumbent Scott Garrett of Wantage is considered potentially vulnerable. Garrett is one of the most conservative congressmen in the nation. Democrat Joshua Gottheimer of Wyckoff is well-financed and has been running an aggressive campaign, including television ads. Still, registered Republicans slightly outnumber Democrats and the unaffiliated trend red, so the Cook Political Report rates this district as leaning Republican. Libertarian Claudio Belusic of Palisades Park is also on the ballot.
