As Gov. Chris Christie continues to trumpet charter school growth in the state, his administration yesterday announced another nine schools have advanced through the first phase of the application process.

Included in the preliminary approvals were three from suburban communities — Franklin, Montclair and Englewood — representing a break from the administration’s recent record of keeping new charter in mostly urban centers.

Just one new school was advanced for Newark, and others included one each in Jersey City, Paterson, and Asbury Park. Twenty-four applications were filed in all.

The schools will move to Phase II of the process, the final stage before they would open in the fall of 2017. The administration’s timeline had been for this stage to be announced in mid-May, but state officials said more time was required. Schools were notified on Friday.
