This northernmost New Jersey district, which includes parts of Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties, is the state’s most talked about. GOP incumbent Scott Garrett is considered potentially vulnerable due to remarks he reportedly made last summer indicating his opposition to House Republicans’ providing financial support for gay candidates. Garrett, of Wantage, is one of the most conservative congressman in the nation. He faces two opponents: Michael Cino of Demarest, who ran in 2012, and Peter Vallorosi of Newton. Democrat Joshua Gottheimer of Wyckoff is unopposed. Although registered Republicans only slightly outnumber registered Democrats, the independents trend red.
