Assembly speaker wants to retain collective bargaining agreements; governor promises veto

Gov. Chris Christie and Senate President Steve Sweeney support a state takeover of Atlantic City government.

But Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto wants to make sure existing collective-bargaining agreements, which would be suspended under the Christie-Sweeney plan, are preserved.

Christie is taking a tough stance on the deal, saying he will veto any legislation that preserves the agreements with city unions.

Prieto says the state already has the tools to restructure Atlantic City’s finances. Christie says the speaker’s insistence on preserving collective bargaining agreements is a play to the public worker unions.
