Aren’t all hospitals safe? Sadly, no. Patients have a 1-in-25 chance of checking out of a medical facility with a so-called hospital-acquired infection. At times, these infections can be serious enough to require readmissions. Indeed, hospital readmissions themselves can be an critical indicator of hospital safety.
Then consider this sobering fact: More than 1,000 people die every day from preventable accidents in hospitals.
In this free NJ Spotlight webinar, we take a closer look at two ways consumers can protect themselves and their loved ones from these sorts of problems. One is The Hospital Safety Score, a public service provided by The Leapfrog Group, which grades hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The NJ Health Care Quality Institute is the Leapfrog Group’s Regional Roll-Out entity for New Jersey and is responsible for encouraging hospitals to publicly report their safety and quality data via the Leapfrog Hospital Survey.
Another critical way that families and loved ones can help improve the level of care that patients receive both in and out of the hospital is the Caregivers Advise, Record and Enable (CARE) Act. This landmark legislation better coordinates care while a patient is in the hospital. It also ensures that caregivers (especially family members) fully understand and are prepared to deliver needed after-hospital care.
