District 31 covers Bayonne and part of Jersey City.
Almost half of all voters in the district are registered as Democrats, and they outnumber unaffiliated voters. Fewer than 7 percent are registered as Republicans.
After winning the most contested Democratic primary in the state last June, Angela V. McKnight of Jersey City and Nicholas Chiaravalloti of Bayonne — the candidates backed by the Hudson County organization — are on the ballot, looking to replace Assemblymen Charles Mainor and Jason O’Donnell, neither of whom sought re-election.
The Republican ticket features Matthew Kopko of Bayonne and Herminio Mendoza of Jersey City. Two independents — Anthony Zanowic and Alejandro Rodriguez, both from Bayonne — are running under the slogan “Your Independent Leadership.”
