Voter Guide 2015: District 5

NJ Spotlight | October 14, 2015 | Elections 2015, Politics

The 5th District encompasses 20 communities in Gloucester and Camden counties: Audubon, Audubon Park, Barrington, Bellmawr, Brooklawn, Camden, Deptford, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, Harrison, Lawnside, Magnolia, Mantua, Mount Ephraim, Runnemede, Wenonah, Westville, Woodbury, and Woodlynn.

This is a safe Democratic district, with about 40 percent of registered voters identifying with the “blue” party, 12 percent Republican, and most of the rest unaffiliated.

This is one of only two districts with both seats open. Assemblyman Gilbert “Whip” Wilson, a Democrat, is not seeking re-election but is running instead for Camden County sheriff. The second Assembly seat is currently empty as Angel Fuentes resigned in June to become deputy clerk for Camden County.

In their places on the ballot are Arthur Barclay of Camden and Patricia Egan Jones of Barrington. Their Republicans opponents are Kevin P. Ehret of Magnolia and Keith A. Walker of Camden, a late addition to the ballot.

This is the only district with a state Senate race. Democratic Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez, who was appointed earlier this year to replace Donald Norcross, who was elected to Congress, is running to keep her seat for the next two years. No Republicans filed.
