District 31 covers Bayonne and part of Jersey City.
Almost half of all voters in the district are registered as Democrats, and they outnumber unaffiliated voters by about 5,000.
The Democratic primary here is the most contested in New Jersey this year. Seven candidates are running for two open seats, as neither assemblyman — Charles Mainor and Jason O’Donnell – is seeking re-election. On one ticket are Joseph W. Conte and Ramon “Ray” Regalado, both of Jersey City. The Hudson County organization is backing Angela V. McKnight of Jersey City and Nicholas Chiaravalloti of Bayonne. A third ticket features Bruce D. Alston of Jersey City and Washington Flores of Bayonne. A seventh Democratic candidate, Dejon Morris of Jersey City, dropped out of the race a few weeks ago.
There is one Republican ticket, Matthew Kopko of Bayonne and Herminio Mendoza of Jersey City.
