2014 marked the 350th anniversary of the Garden State. The television newsmagazine program State of the Arts, set out to document the milestone with a look at arts and culture in New Jersey through the years. Catch glimpses of the music of the 1700s, an illustrated version of Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself, an opera about Paul Robeson, and even a little Tony Soprano and Boardwalk Empire. There’s a lot of ground to cover, including an 1894 clip of boxing cats — perhaps the first clue that over 100 years later, felines would rule the Internet.
