The New Jersey Department of Education has approved 87 charter schools for the 2014-2015 year. The largest number of them – 24 — are in Essex County, followed by Hudson County’s 13 schools and Camden County’s 12. Mercer and Passaic County have six schools and Union and Middlesex County have four. Bergen, Burlington, Cumberland, and Monmouth Counties have three charter schools apiece, while Atlantic County has two charters. Hudson, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren County each have one charter school. That leaves five counties without any charters: Cape May, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Ocean, and Salem.
