District Eight includes parts of New Jersey’s largest cities — Newark and Jersey City — as well as other portions of Hudson and Essex counties, and some Bergen, and Union municipalities.
The incumbent is Democrat Albio Sires, who has been in Congress since 2006. He faces Republican Jude Anthony Tiscornia and three independents: Pablo Olivera, running again under the slogan “Wake Up USA;” Herbert H. Shaw, a long-time perennial candidate whose slogan is “Politicians Are Crooks” in English and Spanish; and Robert Thorne, running under the slogan “911 Truth Needed.”
This is one of two Democratic majority districts, with slightly more than half of all registered voters declaring blue. Only 7.7 percent are registered Republicans.
