Democratic incumbents top ballot in district where 41 percent of voters are aligned with 'blue' party

District 35
District 35 encompasses six communities in Bergen and Passaic counties: Elmwood Park, Garfield, Haledon, North Haledon, Paterson and Prospect Park.

Voter registration is 41 percent Democrat and 8 percent Republican, with most other district voters unaffiliated.

Running for re-election are three Democrats, all from Paterson. Sen. Nellie Pou was first elected into the Assembly in 1997 and is an assistant business administrator for Paterson. Assembly members Shavonda Sumter, a health care administrator, and Benjie Wimberly, recreation director for the city of Paterson and the Paterson School District, are both finishing their first terms.

Opposing Pou for the Senate seat is Republican Lynda Gallashaw, of Paterson. Eying the Assembly seats are Republican candidates Rhina Tavarez, of Paterson, and Maria Del Pilar Rivas, of Paterson.
