2013 Voter Guide: District 5

NJ Spotlight | October 22, 2013 | Elections 2013
In safe Democratic 5th, incumbents run to represent Gloucester, Camden counties

The 5th District encompasses 20 communities in Gloucester and Camden counties: Audubon, Audubon Park, Barrington, Bellmawr, Brooklawn, Camden, Deptford, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, Harrison, Lawnside, Magnolia, Mantua, Mount Ephraim, Runnemede, Wenonah, Westville, Woodbury, and Woodlynn.

This is a safe Democratic district, with about 40 percent of registered voters identifying with the blue party, 12 percent Republican, and most of the rest unaffiliated.

Three Democrats, all of whom are running for re-election, represent the district. Sen. Donald Norcross, a union assistant business manager from Camden, joined the Assembly in 2010 and almost immediately moved up to the Senate to fill a vacancy. Assemblyman Angel Fuentes, a hospital patient relations representative and former Camden councilman, is finishing his second term. Assemblyman Gilbert Wilson, elected in 2009, is a former Air Force sergeant and Camden council member.

A team of Republicans is challenging. Keith Walker, a retired Marine from Camden, is back on the ballot again this year trying to unseat Norcross. Challenging Fuentes and Wilson for the Assembly seats are Republicans David Ragonese of Haddon Heights, and George Wagoner of Woodbury.
