GOP incumbent bows out, leaving an Assembly seat open in Republican-leaning 39th

District 39
District 39 encompasses 23 communities in Bergen and Passaic counties: Bloomingdale, Closter, Demarest, Dumont, Emerson, Harrington Park, Haworth, Hillsdale, Mahwah, Montvale, Norwood, Oakland, Old Tappan, Park Ridge, Ramsey, Ringwood, River Vale, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, Wanaque, Washington, Westwood, and Woodcliff Lake.

Voter registration is 28 percent Republican and 23 percent Democrat; most other voters have no declared party affiliation.

In this GOP district, two of the three Republican incumbents are running again. Seeking re-election to the Senate is Republican Gerald Cardinale of Demarest, a dentist who served one term in the Assembly before joining the Senate in 1982. Freshman Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi, an attorney elected in 2012, is seeking another term. Two seats are on the ballot for the Assembly. Assemblyman Robert Schroeder, currently under indictment for issuing bad checks, is not seeking re-election. Instead, the third Republican candidate is Robert Auth, a business owner from Old Tappan.

The Democrat opposing Cardinale for Senate is Jane Bidwell of Upper Saddle River, a clinical social worker. Running for Assembly are Democrats Anthony Iannarelli, an attorney from Ramsey who ran unsuccessfully last year, and Donna Abene, a Woodcliff Lake councilwoman.
