Democratic, GOP tickets face off in Bergen, Passaic counties

District 38
District 38 encompasses 13 communities in Bergen and Passaic counties: Bergenfield, Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hasbrouck Heights, Hawthorne, Lodi, Maywood, New Milford, Oradell, Paramus, River Edge, Rochelle Park and Saddle Brook.

Voter registration is 30 percent Democratic and 20 percent Republican, with most of the rest unaffiliated, but this is considered one of a few potentially close races this year.

Two of the three Democrats in office are seeking re-election. Sen. Robert Gordon, a former mayor of Fair Lawn, is a manager at his family-owned textile mill. He joined the Assembly in 2004 and moved up to the Senate four years later. Also seeking another term is freshman Assemblyman Timothy Eustace, a chiropractor and former mayor of Maywood. Incumbent Connie Wagner withdrew from the race earlier this year to spend more time with her family. She was replaced on the ballot by Joseph Lagana, a lawyer and president of the Paramus Borough Council.

Opposing Gordon for the Senate seat is Republican Fernando Alsonso, a college professor from Oradell who was unsuccessful in an attempt at an Assembly seat last year. The Republican challengers for the Assembly are Joan Fragala, of Fair Lawn, and Joseph Scarpa, of Rochelle Park.
