Democratic incumbents seek re-election in deep South Jersey

The 3rd District encompasses 33 communities in Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties: Alloway, Bridgeton, Carneys Point, Clayton, Deerfield, East Greenwich, Elk, Elmer, Elsinboro, Franklin (Gloucester), Glassboro, Greenwich (Gloucester), Logan, Lower Alloways Creek, Mannington, National Park, Newfield, Oldmans, Paulsboro, Penns Grove, Pennsville, Pilesgrove, Pittsgrove, Quinton, Salem, South Harrison, Swedesboro, Upper Deerfield, Upper Pittsgrove, West Deptford, Woodbury Heights, Woodstown, and Woolwich. Voter registration is 33 percent Democratic, 19 percent Republican, and most of the rest unaffiliated.

Running for re-election are: Democrat Sen. Stephen Sweeney, elected into the Upper House in 2002, Democratic Assembly members John Burzichelli, serving since 2002, and Celeste Riley, elected in 2009.

Republican Niki Trunk of Monroeville is opposing for the Senate seat, and for the Assembly, Republican Larry Wallace of Woolwich Township and Republican Bob Vanderslice of Pennsville.
