District 29 covers Belleville and part of Newark in Essex County.
Heavily favoring Democrats, there are roughly equal numbers of Democrats and unaffiliated voters — about 47 percent — and just 5 percent Republicans.
Two Democratic incumbents are seeking re-election and there is currently an open seat following the resignation of Alberto Coutinho from the Assembly prior to his pleading guilty to theft and falsifying records regarding a family foundation.
Seeking re-election are Sen. Teresa Ruiz of Newark, deputy chief of staff to the Essex County executive, who has been in the Senate for five years, and Assemblywoman L. Grace Spenser, a Newark attorney finishing her third term. The third Democrat on the ticket is Eliana Pintor Marin of Newark.
Raafat Barsoom of Belleville for the Senate seat, and Aracelis Tejada and Elaine Guarino, both of Newark, for the Assembly are the Republican challengers.
Independent candidate Pablo Olivera of Newark, who is on the ballot for the open U.S. Senate seat, is looking to replace Ruiz.
