Democrats hold big voter-registration edge in Essex County district

District 28
District 28 covers four Essex County communities — Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Irvington and Nutley – and a portion of Newark.

This is one of a handful of districts where Democrats actually outnumber the unaffiliated voters. Some 47 percent of those registered are Democrats, with only 7 percent Republicans.

All three Democratic incumbents list legislator as their primary occupation and they are all seeking re-election. Sen. Ronald Rice, a former deputy mayor of Newark, is in his 27th year in the Senate. Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker, also of Newark, was first elected in 2008. Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, of Bloomfield, also won election in 2008, but he served an earlier term in the Assembly from 1968 to 1972.

Opposing them are a slate of Republicans: Frank Contella, of Nutley, is running for the Senate, while the Assembly hopefuls are James Boydston and Peter Manning, both of Bloomfield.
