GOP seeks to unseat three veteran Democrats in solidly 'blue' district

District 22
District 22 includes 11 communities in Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties: Clark, Dunellen, Fanwood, Green Brook, Linden, Middlesex, North Plainfield, Plainfield, Rahway, Scotch Plains and Winfield.

Voter registration is 42 percent Democratic and 13 percent Republican, with the rest mostly unaffiliated.

Democrats control this district and all three incumbents are seeking re-election. Sen. Nicholas Scutari, a Linden attorney, is finishing his first decade in the Senate. Assemblyman Jerry Green, of Plainfield, is a business consultant who has been in the lower house for 21 years. Assemblywoman Linda Stender, a former mayor of Fanwood and former Union County freeholder, has served six terms in the Assembly.

A full slate of Republicans is challenging them. Robert Sherr, a retired public health officer and former Middlesex councilman, is running for the Senate seat. The Assembly candidates are John Campbell, a small-business owner from Plainfield, and Jeffrey First, a nursing home administrator from Middlesex.
