Atop the ticket seeking re-election is Democratic state Sen. Jim Whelan, who took his seat in 2008 after serving one term in the Assembly. Whelan is a teacher and the former mayor of Atlantic City. This is one of only two districts in the state with representation split between the parties. Both assemblymen seeking re-election are Republicans: John Amodeo, a crane operator from Margate who was first elected in 2008, and Chris A. Brown, an attorney from Ventnor finishing his first term.

Whelan is opposed by Republican Frank Balles, the Atlantic County sheriff who lives in Egg Harbor. Opposing Brown and Amodeo for the Assembly seats are Democrats Vincent Mazzeo, who manages his family produce business and is the mayor of Northfield, and Nick Russo, the mayor of Longport. Also seeking an Assembly seat is Gary Stein an independent from Mullica.
