In Dem stronghold, Democratic lawmakers in 17th seek re-election

District 17 includes five municipalities in Middlesex and Somerset counties: Franklin, Milltown, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, and Piscataway.

This is a Democratic stronghold, with 47 percent of registered voters declaring for the Democratic Party and 10 percent for the Republican. Most of the rest are unaffiliated.

All three legislators are Democrats and all are seeking re-election. Sen. Bob Smith of Piscataway is an attorney who has served in Trenton since 1986, first in the Assembly and since 2002 in the Senate. Assemblyman Joseph Egan of New Brunswick is a union business manager finishing his sixth term in the lower house. Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula is a former Franklin mayor who works as a consultant and also joined the Assembly in 2002.

For Senate, Brian Levine, the current Franklin mayor, heads the Republican slate opposing them. Carlo DiLalla, a financial planner from North Brunswick, and Sanjay Patel of Piscataway are seeking Assembly seats.
