Veteran state senator among three Republican incumbents on ballot in Monmouth County

District 13 is made up 16 communities in Monmouth County: Aberdeen, Atlantic Highlands, Fair Haven, Hazlet, Highlands, Holmdel, Keansburg, Keyport, Little Silver, Marlboro, Middletown, Monmouth Beach, Oceanport, Rumson, Sea Bright and Union Beach.

Voter registration is evenly divided, with 23 percent registered as Democrats and 23 percent as Republicans, with most of the rest listed as unaffiliated.

The district is represented by three Republicans. Seeking re-election state Sen. Joe Kyrillos Jr. of Middletown, who has held the position for more than two decades; he a real estate broker. Assemblywoman Amy Handlin of Lincroft, an associate professor at Monmouth University elected in 2006, and Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon of Little Silver, who previously served as a councilman in Little Silver and was elected to the Assembly in 2010, both seek re-election.

The Democratic challenger for the Senate seat is Joseph Marques of Hazlet, former mayor of that town and a loan mortgage originator. Vying for the Assembly seats are Democrats Matthew Morehead of Red Bank, who attended Brookdale Community College, and Allison Friedman of Aberdeen, owner of a grooming business.

Two independents are also on the ballot: Opposing Kyrillos for the Senate seat is Mac Dara Lynden of Belford and hoping for an Assembly seat is independent Anne Zaletel, vice president of a Wall Street brokerage.
