2013 Voter Guide: District 11

NJ Spotlight News | October 22, 2013 | Elections 2013
In Democratic-leaning 11th, the GOP and state’s only all-female team seek re-election

District 11 encompasses 18 municipalities in Monmouth County: Allenhurst, Asbury Park, Colts Neck, Deal, Eatontown, Freehold Borough and Township, Interlaken, Loch Arbour, Long Branch, Neptune Borough and Township, Ocean Township, Red Bank, Shrewsbury Borough and Township, Tinton Falls, and West Long Branch.

This is one of the rare districts whose representation does not seem to match its voter registration. Three Republicans represent the 11th, but there are more registered Democrats than Republicans, 28 percent versus 20 percent Republican. However, the majority of voters are not affiliated with a major party and they tend to vote red in this district.

The 11th has the only all-female legislative team in the state and all three incumbents are all seeking re-election. Sen. Jennifer Beck of Red Bank is president of a marketing firm and has served in the Legislature since 2006, with her first two years in the Assembly. Assemblywomen Mary Pat Angelini, executive director of a Monmouth County nonprofit, is finishing her third term in the lower house and lives in Ocean Township. Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande of Colts Neck also joined the Assembly in 2008.

A full slate of Democrats is challenging. Michael Brantley, a dentist and deputy mayor of Neptune Township, is seeking the Senate seat. Edward Zipprich, a Red Bank councilman, and Kevin McMillan, a former pharmaceutical representative and Neptune Township committeeman, are seeking Assembly seats.

There is one independent on the ballot for Senate, Marie Amato-Juckiewicz of Long Branch.
